On the 29th of June 2024, Roadkill Rollers hosted the Small Teams Tournament at Sporthal de Horstacker; a day filled with roller derby fun! Eight teams were invited to play, divided over two poules. The winner of each poule would play each other in the grand final.
Poule A: Mine Monsters Oberhausen, Market Gardeners, Amsterdam Roller Derby, Roller Derby Breda
Poule B: Roller Derby Groningen, Arnhem Fallen Angels + Friends, Brünster Roller Derby, Roller Derby Twente
The day started off with a game in poule A, between Mine Monsters and Amsterdam Roller Derby. The players clad in the pink colors of Amsterdam Roller Derby were victorious over the orange Mine Monsters. The poule was ultimately won by the Market Gardeners, who defeated Roller Derby Breda, Amsterdam Roller Derby and Mine Monsters to get to the final.
Poule B also had many exciting games in store! The games in this poule were all pretty close, leading to an exciting final game between Roller Derby Twente and Brünster Roller Derby to determine the other finalist. Something happened that almost never happens in roller derby: this game ended in a tie! This meant that the game went into overtime,
One final two-minute jam one played to see who would have a shot at the trophy! The crowd was getting behind both teams, the exhilaration and adrenaline could be felt throughout the sports hall. In the end, it was Roller Derby Twente who proved to be the stronger team, and they would move onto the finals, facing the Market Gardeners!
The final was a great game, with both teams challenging the other, getting ahead and then falling behind. In the end, it was the Market Gardeners who were victorious, raising the trophy at the end of the day.
